Someone cut open the canvas top of a Jeep in the 400 block of Dearing Street and stole several backpacks containing laptop computers and other items valued at more than $4,500 and owned by four University of Georgia students, Athens-Clarke County police said.
When an officer arrived to take a report, the students were tracking one the laptops with its GPS, which indicated the device was on the UGA campus, police said. Two of the students accompanied the officer in his car, but before they could pin down the computer’s exact location the device was turned off, according to police.
