Fights that broke out at Cedar Shoals High School Monday morning led to at least four students being arrested and additional students sent home early.

The altercations caused the school to undergo a “soft lock down” and delayed the start of classes by about half an hour.

School Principal DeAnne Varitek informed parents and guardians about the fights in a letter on Monday that multiple fights among students occurred during first period and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to investigate.

“Students were held in first period until issues were resolved, as student safety is and remains our primary concern,” Varitek said in the letter.

The principal sought to allay any concerns parents and guardians may have had, assuring them that “school is now operating normally with students engaged in their learning and in their regularly-scheduled classes.”

The students who were involved in the fights “are subject to disciplinary actions per our Student Code of Conduct,” Varitek said.

According to Varitek, the fights stemmed from "issues" between some students that occurred over the weekend.

All of the students who were arrested were 17 years old.

They were identified as Terique Eberhart, Raydreone Keshad Howard, Tyrique Tyrell Kenney and Lacarlos Montique Massey. They were each charged with affray/fighting in public and disorderly conduct.

A total bond of $4,000 was set for each student, and as of Tuesday afternoon Kenney and Howard both remained in jail with the other two students having posted their bonds.
