Athens-Clarke police, firefighters and EMTs teamed up early Sunday morning to save the life of a 62-year-old man who apparently suffered a heart attack on a downtown sidewalk.
The man and his wife had just left the Waffle House on East Clayton Street at about 12:30 a.m. when he grabbed his chest and fell, striking his head on the sidewalk, according to a police report.
When police responded to a report of a man down, they found that an off-duty EMT was performing CPR on the victim, at which time Officer Nick Jablonski took over, according to the report. After working on the man several minutes, the officer saw that the man had a faint pulse and also had taken some breaths. Officer Troy Choudhury then took over aiding the victim until he was relieved by members of the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department, according to the police report.
A National EMS ambulance crew took the victim to St. Mary’s Hospital.
