A former employee of a westside restaurant is suspected of trying to rob the place early Sunday because even though he wore a mask during the a hold-up, a former co-worker recognized him, and called his name. Athens-Clarke County police said.

The suspect entered Wingster on Baxter Street at about 1:18 a.m., throwing a bag at an employee and ordering her at gunpoint to fill it with money from a register, according to police.

When another employee emerged from the kitchen and called out, “Chris,” believing he recognized the person wearing the ski mask, the robber reportedly “responded” to the name and then left the restaurant.

Athens man says he was pushed to ground by two pre-teen girls

A 69-year-old man was injured in east Athens Saturday afternoon when pushed to the ground, apparently by two girls who were as young as 10 years old, Athens-Clarke County police said.

The victim told police he was walking to his Bonnie Lane home when the juveniles approached him in the area of Bray and Fourth street, asking what he had in his pockets. After telling them it was none of their business, the girls reportedly pushed the man in the back, causing him to fall and strike his head on a curb, according to police.

Though bleeding from an injury over his eye, the man declined having an ambulance crew respond so he could be checked out, police said. When offered a ride home, the man told an officer he preferred to walk.
