Authorities today are searching the east side of Athens for a man wanted for rape and other felonies.
Christopher Lowe, 42, fled from an Athens-Clarke County police officer during a traffic stop and was last seen in the area of College Station and Riverbend Roads.
Police said Lowe fled because he was wanted on warrants charging him with rape, aggravated assault, battery and false imprisonment.
Police officers are being assisted in their search by Clarke County sheriff’s deputies and University of Georgia police officers.
The search is covering a large wooded area along the North Oconee River from Riverbend Road to Whitehall Road. The area contains several student housing complexes and university properties, including the UGA golf course. One woman reportedly called police to report seeing a white male wearing a white tank top sitting on the river’s bank apparently out of breath.
Authorities are urging people to call 911 if they see anyone fitting Lowe’s description.
