A tractor-trailer caught fire this morning, temporarily disrupting traffic on a main thoroughfare west of downtown Athens.
A mechanical problem apparently sparked the fire, which destroyed the engine of the big rig, according to Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department officials.
The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured, officials said.
Police officers were on the scene to divert traffic around the burned truck and never had to close West Broad Street in front of The Varsity where the fire occurred.
