Authorities are investigating the possibility that a student at Cedar Shoals High School became ill after her juice was spiked with an unknown substance.
The 16-year-old girl’s mother called police on Sept. 1 to report taking her daughter to Athens Regional Medical Center the day before. The girl had asked to be picked up from school because she wasn’t feeling well, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.
The girl said she left a container of juice on her desk when going to the restroom, and upon returning to class she drank the juice and immediately experienced a burning sensation in her stomach and chest. She also said she had received text messages from someone who mentioned having had someone put something in her juice, according to police.
The teacher reported he did not see anyone go near the drink, police said.
The remaining juice was collected as evidence and police are awaiting results of toxicology tests.
