Two men were arrested on Eastwood Court early Monday when they were found in possession of several bags of marijuana, Athens-Clarke County police said.
Two officers were on foot patrol at about 1:20 a.m. when they smelled the odor of burning marijuana wafting from where a group of men were standing in front of an apartment, police said. When investigating, the officers found a burning joint on the ground near the men, and one of the officers was able to see that a bag of pot was in a pocket of 33-year-old Demarquemis Deion Williams. When Williams threw the bag onto the roof of the apartment, the officers went to arrest him and he resisted and so had to be taken to the ground, according to police.
While that struggle was occurring, a third officer who was on the scene saw Stantavious Lamar Malcolm toss a digital scale to the side of the apartment, police said. Malcolm was arrested and subsequently searched, at which time he was found to have four bags of pot, according to police.
Both men were charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, police said, and Williams was additionally charged with obstruction and tampering with evidence.
