An accused child molester was indicted this week on charges he assaulted a young Athens girl over the course of several months.
The child was under 10 years old when she allegedly was assaulted, according to the indictment filed Tuesday in Clarke County Superior Court.
The alleged assaults were said in the indictment to have occurred in three locations between January and May at two different apartment complexes and at a house in east Athens
In addition to allegedly assaulting the child, 24-year-old Stephon Chadwick Kinney allegedly assaulted the girl’s mother on May 7, resulting in injuries to the woman including a fractured leg, according to the indictment.
Kinney was charged in the indictment with three counts each of aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy and aggravated sexual battery, and one count of aggravated battery.
Aggravated battery was charged under the state Family Violence Act, because the child victim’s mother formerly lived with Kinney, according to the indictment.
Kinney was arrested on May 10. Bail was set at $40,000, but he apparently was not able to come up with the money as he was listed Wednesday as being an inmate of the Clarke County Jail. Kinney asked bail be reduced, a request denied by Superior Court Judge Eric Norris in June.
In a letter to the judge in August, Kinney claimed he was innocent and was falsely accused.
