A University of Georgia student was arrested early Friday after he allegedly tried to break into a neighbor’s home on Artisan Place, Athens-Clarke County police said.
The 21-year neighbor told police that at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, she texted Jonathan Hanagriff and asked him to come over to kill a cockroach. When he came over, Hanagriff allegedly was intoxicated and made the victim uncomfortable enough that she made up an excuse for why he had to leave, police said.
The UGA student did leave, according to police, but between midnight and 2:50 a.m. he called and texted the neighbor, who said she only met Hanagriff a couple of times prior to that night.
When the victim heard what sounded like someone trying to break in, she called 911 and locked herself in the bathroom, police said. Officers arrived to find a knife stuck in the victim’s back door frame, in an apparent attempt to jimmy the lock.
Hanagriff, 20, who police said was found in between residences, was charged with loitering and prowling, underage consumption of alcohol, criminal trespass, and also with possession of fake ID because of a fraudulent New York driver’s license he had, according to police.
