An Athens man on Monday was recovering from non-life threatening injuries he suffered when his teenage brother shot him during a weekend argument at the victim’s home in west Athens.
Octavious Turner, 24, was shot once in the upper chest by his brother, 18-year-old Nigel Zachariah Turner, inside the older brother’s residence on Huntington Court near the Georgia Square mall, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
The shooting was reported by a family member at about 10:38 p.m., and the younger brother was arrested a short time later on Cavalier Road, also located near the mall, police said. Nigel Turner was charged with one count of aggravated assault and on Monday was being at the Clarke County Jail. He was denied bail during an appearance before a Magistrate Court judge.
An argument preceded the shooting, but neither of the brothers, nor any of the other family members who were present would say what the argument was about, said Lt. Mike Tyndell, commanding officer of the Athens-Clarke police Robbery Homicide Unit.
Nigel Turner has a cocaine possession charge pending in Clarke County Superior Court from an arrest last month, and is a known associate of an Athens street gang. Tyndell said investigators had no information to suggest the shooting was related to gangs or drugs.
