Thieves this week burglarized four businesses at the Georgia Square mall, breaking into safes and cash registers and stealing athletic shoes, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
The stores were broken into late Monday night or early Tuesday by thieves who pried open back doors to the businesses, identified by police as Kids Foot Locker, Journeys, Justice and Rainbow.
At the time police reports were filed, employees had yet to take inventory to determine all that was stolen, though a total of $1,050 was said to have been stolen from safes at Journeys and Rainbow, according to police.
Safes that were entered were found in restrooms at the businesses, with triangle shaped openings cut into them, police said.
The stores were thought by police to have been entered through back doors, with pry marks found on the doors of three of the businesses. At the Journeys teen clothing store, however, the only damage observed to the back door was on the inside, according to police, who said, “this is the only place (where) entry could have been made.”
In addition to stealing cash the burglars got away with “many” boxes of Nike Jordan brand sneakers, from Kids Foot Locker, police said.
The burglars overlooked a bag containing a large amount of cash that was in a back room at the Rainbow women’s apparel shop, according to police.
The businesses were not adjacent to each other, but were located on both the lower and upper floors of the Atlanta Highway mall.
