An early Wednesday fire displaced three people from their home in southwest Athens-Clarke County.

One of the residents reportedly suffered minor burns when using a garden hose in an attempt to put out the fire prior to calling 911.

The fire on Dowdy Road, near the Oconee County line, was reported to the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Department at 12:39 a.m., and when firefighters arrived on the scene they encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions on the first floor of the dwelling, Assistant Fire Chief Mark Melvin said.

Both adults and a child who lived there were already out of the home, he said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, and after checking for possible extension of the fire into other portions of the dwelling and salvaging the property they left the scene just prior to 3 a.m.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Northeast Georgia were at the scene to provide any assistance required by the residents who were not able to remain at the residence because of significant smoke damage, Melvin said.
