An 85-year-old man reported Monday he received a call from someone pretending to be his grandson who claimed to have been arrested and needed money to keep from going to jail, Athens-Clarke County police said.
After following the caller’s instructions to go to Kroger and purchase $2,000 worth of iTunes cards, the man phoned his grandson in Florida and learned his relative was not in any kind of trouble, according to police.
It was unclear from the report whether the man ever gave the caller the iTunes card numbers.
