A Clarke County grand jury this week indicted an Athens man for a February shooting near campus that caused the University of Georgia to go on security alert.
The grand jury charged 25-year-old Kristopher Demone Ellison with armed robbery and aggravated assault for shooting at a man he allegedly was robbing at Park Place Apartments, adjacent to UGA’s Health Sciences Campus off Prince Avenue, according to the indictment filed Tuesday in Clarke County Superior Court.
The incident occurred Feb. 10, outdoors and shortly before 3 p.m., when students and faculty were out and about at the campus nearby. With reports of a gunman running in the area, a university-wide security alert was issued by the UGA Police Department.
Athens-Clarke County police arrested Ellison two weeks later, upon learning the suspect was travelling in a certain vehicle. Members of the Crime Suppression Unit took him into custody after the vehicle was located at InTown Suites on South Milledge Avenue.
Police said they also arrested two people who were with Ellison. Tiffany Nicole Baughns, 29, and Ricky Carter Jr., 23, were each charged with hindering apprehension of a criminal. Carter was additionally charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
The Morgan County Sheriff's Office placed a hold on Ellison’s release from custody in Athens because they had warrants charging him with possession of cocaine and a probation violation.
Since his arrest three months ago, Ellison has been held at the Clarke County Jail without bail being set for his release.
