The woman who was struck and killed by a train in Athens Thursday morning was identified by police as 31-year-old  Brandi Sue Darling.

Darling was homeless at the time, according to Athens-Clarke County police, who on Friday continued to investigate the woman’s death.

Police said they were trying to determine whether the woman was accidentally struck, or if it was intentional on her part.

The incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday, when Darling was struck by an eastbound CSX train east of the Wynburn Avenue crossing, near the Boulevard neighborhood.

“When the conductor saw Darling on the tracks, (he) blew the horn but Darling did not move from the tracks,” police said. “The train’s emergency brake was applied but it could not stop in time and Darling was struck and died at the scene.”

Police said that Darling was homeless, but they were unsure where she most recently was staying. There are some homeless camps in the area where she died.

She also “had a local address listed, but we haven't confirmed she was actually staying there,” police Capt. Mark Magnuson said.
