A man accused of strangling a woman filed a police report last week claiming his money meant for an ankle monitor fee was stolen from the a county probation office on Lexington Road.

According to the Athens-Clarke County police report, the man said after he was arrested for the alleged assault in September, his aunt withdrew $175 from his account to pay the fee for an ankle monitor and gave a money order in that amount to someone in the probation office.

The man said it turned out he never actually needed the monitor, and after getting out of jail in February he went to the probation office to retrieve the money order and was told it was not there, according to the police report.

The man said he was told he needed to file a police report before probation could begin investigating.
