A Clarke County grand jury recently indicted an Athens man for shooting at another man inside an eastside music shop in September.

Travis Rayshawn Smith, 28 was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and criminal trespass, according to the indictment filed Tuesday in Clarke County Superior Court.

Athens-Clarke County police said the shooting happened Sept. 17 inside Bert’s Discount Records, apparently the culmination of a fight that occurred earlier in the day in which a man purportedly assaulted Smith’s nephew.

When Smith and several family members went to confront the man at Triangle Plaza, Smith allegedly pulled a gun on the man, who ran into the record store with Smith following, police said.

A store employee tried to get between the two men, but backed off when Smith allegedly pointed the gun at him, police said. Smith then fired the gun toward the man who supposedly attacked his nephew, according to police, who said no one was injured.

Police said Smith left the scene in a vehicle but the Sartain Drive resident was arrested a short time later.

Smith got out of jail a few days later, after posting a $7,900 surety bond.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 16.
