Sidney Montique West, 39, was arrested for drunken driving early Sunday when found sleeping in his pickup truck on Barnett Shoals Road, where he allegedly drove it after crashing his truck into a parked car on Barrington Drive, Athens-Clarke County police said.
Police said a witness saw West drive from the accident and followed him to where officers found the Statham resident asleep at the wheel, on Barnett Shoals Road, some 75 feet prior to the red light at Lexington Road, police said. West refused to get out of the pickup when asked to by an officer, police said.
West refused to submit to sobriety tests and was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and no proof of insurance, police said. He was also cited for stopping his vehicle in the roadway and driving with faulty tires.
