A puppy that was seen wandering along Prince Avenue Thursday afternoon was struck by a vehicle and it subsequently bit two women who corralled the injured animal, Athens-Clarke County police said.
The dog had been with another puppy, but both ran off when a police officer saw and attempted to capture them at about noon, police said. One of the dogs returned and then was struck by a vehicle when it tried crossing the busy road, according to police.
When the dog ran off again, toward the Athens Perimeter, the officer gave chase until he came upon a woman who was holding the animal and bleeding from where it had bitten her on the hand, police said. She told of another woman who attempted to catch the dog and suffered bites to both hands as well as bruising on the throat where she had also been bitten, police said.
Athens-Clarke County Animal Control responded to take possession of the dog, described by police as being a “pit bull like” puppy that was about four months old. An Animal Control officer told police they received reports the dogs were thrown from a car by a woman.
The injured samaritans were checked out at the scene by EMS, police said, and they both later went on their own to seek medical care.
