A 50-year-old homeless man was arrested Sunday night after he spit on a manager of a downtown restaurant, Athens-Clarke County police said.
After finishing his meal, Wesley McDuffie reportedly left money on the table at The Grill on College Avenue and was leaving the restaurant when the manager stopped him to see if the customer left enough money to pay for his food. When the manager saw McDuffie left too much money and tried to give McDuffie change, the man reportedly spit on him.
The manager told police he was spit on in the face, while McDuffie insisted he spat on the manager’s shirt.
McDuffie claimed the manager struck him in the face, and the manager said he only put his hand over McDuffie’s mouth to keep him from spitting, according to police.
McDuffie, who held a closed bottle of liquor while talking to a police officer, was arrested and charged with simple battery and public intoxication.
