A 12-year-old boy is facing a battery charge in Juvenile Court after he assaulted his mother on Sunday, Athens-Clarke County police said. The mother told police her son became enraged after she told him he could not leave the house to attend some sort of gathering to memorialize a slain purported member of an Athens street gang.
An officer noted in a police incident report that the mother’s hair was disheveled, pieces of hair were on her chest, arms and back, she had a bite mark on her hand and carpet burn on an elbow. The woman said she did not want her son to attend the gathering because it involved people who had a “bad influence” on him, according to police.
A Department of Juvenile Justice official reportedly told police not to detain the boy. His mother said she would be going to Juvenile Court and seeking counseling for her son.
