A 15-year-old boy who was on juvenile probation was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he got into an altercation with his parents and tore off his ankle monitor, Athens-Clarke County police said.
The mother told police the incident began when her son refused to help bring groceries into the home, became disrespectful and started tearing things up, including his ankle monitor. The boy claimed his mom had struck him with a broom in an attempt to get him up off a couch, and after trading shoves with his father, his father punched him. Police said when officers arrived at the home, the boy was crying and held out his arms, as though waiting to be handcuffed, and said he did not want to be there.
He was charged as an unruly child and with tampering with an electronic device. After consulting with a Department of Juvenile Justice official, officers released the boy into the custody of his grandfather.
